Compact SUVs offer more space than a car while still being easier on the wallet than a full-size SUV. The best thing about these models is that they’re easy to navigate, and they give drivers the added height they need to see clearly and feel safer. But with so many compact SUVs on the market, how do you know which one offers the best deal? We’re narrowing it down to two important compact SUV models today to help you choose the best compact SUV on the market. Let’s look at the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2022 Chevy Equinox.

Both models come with similar pricing and the same general bodystyle. However, despite their similar pricing, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan offers a bit more for the money. Before you hop onto the Equinox train, you’ll definitely want to check out this comparison and explore everything that the Volkswagen model has to offer.

  • Interior

A close up shows the black leather on a seat in a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan.

It’s not just what’s under the hood that counts, and while visual appeal matters, none of it is relevant if your experience in the driver’s seat is subpar. You want to choose the model that offers the best interior options here, especially since these models are within the same price range.

    European Luxury

A vehicle’s interior includes its space, its design, and its convenience features. The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is proficient in all three of these departments. It includes up to 73.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats down, leatherette and leather upholstery options, and even standard heated seats, which are new for the 2022 model. Most importantly, despite its compact size, the new Tiguan can seat up to 7 passengers, breaking the norm for its class average.

Every 2022 Tiguan model comes with at least an 8-inch digital gauge display, but it can be upgraded to a 10-inch display if desired. The standard infotainment system includes convenience features such as Wi-Fi hotspot access, touchscreen climate controls, and even App-Connect, which means you can connect smartphone apps directly to your infotainment center.

    Chevy Features

Conversely, the 2022 Chevy Equinox offers less cargo space, landing at 63.9 cubic feet. It also only seats up to 5 passengers. Further, it includes a standard 7-inch touchscreen interface, with an option to upgrade to an 8-inch for an additional fee. Heated seating is an add-on for this model rather than standard as well. Overall, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan clearly offers better interior features than the 2022 Chevy Equinox.

  • Safety

Crash-test ratings used to be the only safety factor you’d consider when buying a new vehicle. However, driver-assist features have become the new norm, aiding heavily in accident prevention. It’s not so much a question as to whether the model you’re looking at has driver-assist features, either. The real question is, how many driver-assist features does it have, and at what cost?

    VW Safety Technology

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan’s base model comes with standard front, side, and rear assist, which can alert you when you’re getting too close to an object or another vehicle. After the base trim, every other 2022 Tiguan trim includes something called “IQ.DRIVE” at no extra cost. This safety suite includes far more driver-assist options, including up to nine different safety features. This includes expected features such as Blind Spot Monitoring and a lane-keeping system, but it also includes less common features like Travel Assist.

The Travel Assist feature allows for semi-autonomous driving, a typically costly new technology that almost allows you to let the SUV drive itself as long as you’re paying close attention to the road. While you can’t watch a television show while behind the wheel, you can rest your legs on long trips by letting Travel Assist take the lead.

    Chevy Safety Technology

The 2022 Chevy Equinox comes with Chevy Safety Assist, which is a safety suite that only includes four driver-assist features and automatic high-beam headlights. This includes features such as Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist. While Chevy’s standard safety features are helpful, the variety doesn’t match up with the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan’s safety suite.

  • Exterior

While your vehicle’s exterior appeal isn’t the most important feature, it’s definitely one you want to consider once your interior and safety features pass the test. This is especially true because the exterior is about more than aesthetics; it’s also about functionality.

    European Style

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan got a makeover and now has an all-new front-end design. While older Tiguan models had a slimmer, less refined front grille, the 2022 model comes with a wider and shinier grille that makes the whole model pop. Otherwise, it has the same sporty bodystyle it has always had. But if you want to kick the sportiness up a notch, the 2022 model comes in the R-line trim, which offers its own unique bumpers and even side sills to give the Tiguan more definition. Lastly, this model comes with a power-liftgate which makes loading and unloading a breeze.

    Chevy Design

The new Equinox offers the same general design across trims. It has a bulkier appeal, and while it does offer the sportier RS trim, this trim simply offers a black grille and wheels along with RS badging. There are no major exterior design changes aside from color and wheel design. The 2022 Chevy Equinox does include a power liftgate just like its Volkswagen competition. However, its overall design is slightly less luxurious and sporty than the Tiguan.

  • Technology

While some tech features fall under the interior convenience category, there are many additional technologies to go over here. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are some of the standard features that come with both vehicles, but there are several that are unique to each model.

    VW Technology

Let’s start with the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan. This model includes a Fender Premium Audio System. The same brand that has brought you some of the most impressive guitars out there created an audio system that is currently unique to newer Volkswagen and Nissan vehicles. This sound system is known for its ability to make your cab feel like an in-person concert. In addition to this feature, you’ll also get standard wireless device charging when you choose a higher trim Volkswagen Tiguan.

Another unique tech feature that comes with the Tiguan is its Dynamic Road Sign Recognition feature. Not only does this keep you safe on the highway, but it helps keep you from getting tickets by reminding you of speed limits and other road rules you may not have noticed. Cruise Control with Stop and Go will make it even easier to cruise without the need to constantly reset your cruise control to match the flow of traffic. Despite its affordable price tag, the 2022 Tiguan includes several standards and optional features that make the ride much easier and a lot more fun.

    Chevy Technology

The 2022 Chevy Equinox includes a few tech gems as well, mostly when it comes to internet connection. Unlike most models, the new Equinox does include a standard Wi-Fi hotspot, which is typically a feature that drivers must add on or upgrade to higher trims to get. But aside from this feature (which does require a monthly subscription) and standard Bluetooth connectivity, the Equinox doesn’t offer special technologies to make it stand out against competitors.

You can expect more tech features when a competing model is higher in price. However, when two models offer similar pricing, you definitely want to go with the one that offers the best tech options. Between these two models, the Tiguan definitely comes out the strongest in the tech field.
