  • Overview

A white 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan SE R-Line is angled left.

Volkswagen is updating the popular Tiguan for 2022 with new technology and styling to give its most popular model an even more upscale appeal. From the new shaping of the front end to the bright LED taillights, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan makes the SUV segment classier with clean lines and sleek features. Volkswagen has chosen to “streamline” its trims to offer a singular upper-level model that delivers more value to buyers with a combination of luxe features, and the entry-level trim offers conveniences and comforts to please every buyer.

From the entry-level S trim, buyers can expect daily driving to be a delight in the 2022 Tiguan with fresh interior styling and new conveniences. The second trim, the SE, begins to open up the technology offerings significantly, while the SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line trims shift toward a sporty styling with larger wheels for better performance. Most trims come standard with front-wheel drive with the option to add 4Motion all-wheel drive, with the exception of the SEL R-Line trim, which comes standard as all-wheel drive only. Seating for seven passengers is standard for front-wheel drive models, and all-wheel drive models seat five.

Volkswagen continues to offer the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which harnesses 184 horsepower with 221 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though the engine remains the same in its output and capability, Volkswagen has tuned the engine for improved power delivery and a more refined driving experience. Expect driving to be more engaging while still enjoying the practicality of the well-laid-out interior VW buyers have come to love.

  • Interior

The brown and black interior and front seats are shown in a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan.

With the new updates comes a crisp modern interior for the 2022 Tiguan, noticeable in the contrasting gray stitching design in the door insert panels, seats, and center armrest. Entry-level trims adhere to a black and gray palette for the cloth seats, while the upper trims feature leatherette in cinnamon or Noisette leather in nut brown. Standard heated front seats and keyless entry start the Tiguan off with desirable features, and moving up to the second trim offers a powered tailgate and a touch interface for the automatic climate control.

    Premium Features

For more luxury, the R-Line models gain touches like a leather-wrapped steering wheel with “touch islands and sliders” that incorporate new touch-sensitive buttons with haptic feedback similar to engaging with a smartphone screen. A fully digital eight-inch instrument cluster display is standard, with a larger ten-inch display available in upper trims. An available heated steering wheel is a relief when driving on cold days. Additional available features like a panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats bring both more light and comfort to the interior, and available ambient lighting in 15 colors can set the tone of the interior at night.

    Plenty of Space

For two-row models, the cargo space behind the second-row seats measures 37.6 cubic feet, which is plenty of room for any luggage, groceries, or equipment you need to transport. Folding down the rear seats to fit larger items or more cargo nearly doubles the rear area to 73.5 cubic feet. For the three-row models, the cargo space behind the third row measures 12.0 cubic feet. Folding down the third row opens cargo space to 33.0 cubic feet, and with all rear seats folded, the 2022 Tiguan has up to 65.7 cubic feet of storage. Whatever you need to take with you on the road, your 2022 Tiguan has the space, and additional room on the roof can be utilized with the available roof rails.

  • Technology

For 2022, Volkswagen makes technology more prominent for the Tiguan, which starts with standard Car-Net capability to allow WiFi connectivity with a data subscription and a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen for the infotainment. With Car-Net capability, users gain remote access to their 2022 Tiguan through an app on their smartphones. By clicking on the app, you can engage remote starting, locking or unlocking, and even honk the horn or flash the lights if you can’t locate your vehicle in a parking lot. These are features all buyers can access on every trim and make your Tiguan accessible from anywhere. Even if you’re well into shopping and realize you forgot to lock your SUV, the app allows you to handle it through your phone.

    Connected and Feature-Packed

By choosing the SE trim, a wider scope of features opens to include a larger eight-inch touchscreen loaded with the Modular Infotainment Matrix 3, which is a new infotainment system from Volkswagen. Included in this system are wireless charging and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which allow you to connect your smartphone to the infotainment automatically. The Climatronic touch interface for climate control is also found in the infotainment system, a feature that allows touch interaction with sensors for the climate control to fine-tune interior comfort. In addition, the infotainment can be controlled by hand gestures to move between pages of the screen.

Through the infotainment interface, the available 15-color ambient lighting can be controlled with a color palette display that operates with a simple touch to change the mood. Sound system settings, apps, and other interior features are all found within the intuitive system to make your drive as exciting or calming as you need it to be. For buyers who choose the uppermost SEL R-Line trim, a Fender audio system delivers rich, full sound to your music experience for even more exceptional quality to enhance your drive.

  • Exterior

Right away, the 2022 VW Tiguan stands out in its fresh front-end design. Clean lines across the grille meet seamlessly with the standard LED headlights and mesh neatly with the look of the uninterrupted side panels. New standard LED taillights ensure rear visibility, along with the standard LED daytime running lights shaped similar to the air vents in the front fender, lending the shaping a unified appearance. Dual exhaust finishers keep the rear of the Tiguan tidy, and options for new paint colors in red or white offer up a pair of fresh looks.

Upper trims gain either a sporty black trim or chrome details to upgrade the exterior elements with more flair and personality. Wheels for the 2022 Tiguan have a new design and are offered in a variety of sizes from 17-20 inches. R-Line trims will deliver the sportier, bolder front end with larger wheels for more pronounced performance. An available LED bar stretches across the grille between the headlights to highlight the front end and the VW logo in the grille.

    Advanced Safety Technology

Safety features for the 2022 Tiguan are also upgraded for the new model year, with standard Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, and more as part of the equipment for all models. Other safety features that can be found on upper trims include a park assist for nearly autonomous parking and Dynamic Road Sign Recognition. VW truly delivers a wide range of safety features for safer driving on every roadway, day and night.

With the second-tier SE trim, the 2022 Tiguan gains IQ Drive, which offers exceptional features like Adaptive Cruise Control Stop and Go, plus Emergency Assist and Lane Assist. While the IQ Drive may come standard for the second trim level and up, it is available as a feature that can be added to the entry-level trim for buyers who wish to enjoy the benefits of the comprehensive features.
